A multitude from the ancients. 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
