The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 “I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you.” 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth". 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
