The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 And by oath of the day when it shines 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 you strive in various ways. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 And believes in the best [reward], 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 and calls the ultimate good a lie 9 We shall facilitate the path to affliction 10 When he falls (into Hell), his wealth will not help him. 11 Verify on us is the guidance 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell); 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 even he who gives his wealth. to purify himself 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
