Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the clear Book, 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 In it every wise matter is determined 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. 23 And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 So the heavens and the earth did not weep for them, and they were not given respite. 29
