The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 Certainly We have created man to be in distress. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). 19 Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in. 20
