The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 Arise and warn! 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 And stay away from idols. 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 that shall be a Harsh Day 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 and children living in his presence, 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 And what will make you realize what hell is? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 Blackening the skins. 29 over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
