a large throng from the ancients, 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqum. 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
