۞ (God will command the angels), "Gather together the unjust, their spouses, and what they had worshipped 22 Instead of Allah, and lead them to the path to hell; 23 And halt them so that they may be questioned. 24 "What is the matter with you? Why do you not help one another (as you used to do in the world)?" 25 Nay, but that day they shall submit (to Judgment); 26 They will then turn towards each other (and start wrangling). 27 Some [of them] will say: "Behold, you were wont to approach us [deceptively] from the right!" 28 [To which] the others will reply: "Nay, you yourselves were bereft of all faith! 29 Moreover, we had no power at all over you: nay, you were people filled with overweening arrogance! 30 and so we became deserving of the Word of our Lord that we shall be made to suffer chastisement. 31 Thus we misled you. Lo! we were (ourselves) astray. 32 On that day they will all share the torment. 33 As such We shall deal with the evildoers. 34 For they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff themselves up with Pride, 35 and replied, "Shall we then give up our deities at the bidding of a mad poet?" 36 (They say so although) he brought the Truth and confirmed the veracity of the Messengers. 37 “You surely have to taste the painful punishment.” 38 And you shall not be rewarded except (for) what you did. 39 Except the chosen creatures of God, 40 For them there is a known provision, 41 Fruits! And they shall be honoured. 42 in the Gardens of Bliss. 43 sitting face to face upon couches, 44 A cup will be passed round among them [with a drink] from unsullied springs, 45 white, a delight to the drinkers, 46 There shall be no trouble in it, nor shall they be exhausted therewith. 47 And besides them will be chaste women, restraining their glances, with big eyes (of wonder and beauty). 48 As if they were [delicate] eggs, well-protected. 49 They will turn to each other and ask questions. 50 One of them will say: “I had a companion in the world 51 who would say, "Are you a confirmer? 52 (Do you think) we would be paid back our due when we are dead and reduced to dust and bones?' 53 He said: 'Will you look down?' 54 Then, he will look and see him in the midst of Hell. 55 He said: "By Allah! thou wast little short of bringing me to perdition! 56 If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in [to Hell]. 57 (Another will say:)"Is it true, we are not going to die 58 [again,] beyond our previous death, and that we shall never [again] be made to suffer? 59 Truly, this is a great victory!" 60 For the like of this, then, let them labour, those who labour [in God's way]! 61 Is Paradise a better accommodation or the tree of zaqqum? 62 Which We have reserved as punishment for evil-doers? 63 It is a tree that grows at the bottom of Hell. 64 Its spathes are like the prickly pear. 65 Then most surely they shall eat of it and fill (their) bellies with it. 66 On top of it they shall have a brew of boiling water, 67 Then most surely their return shall be to hell. 68 They found their fathers erring, 69 So they hastily follow their footsteps! 70 yet before them most of the ancients went astray, 71 And assuredly We sent among them warners. 72 See then the end of those who were warned, 73 Except the sincere (and devoted) Servants of Allah. 74
