(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
