A throng of the ancients 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
