The chiefs of Pharaoh's people said: Lo! this is some knowing wizard, 109 and said, "He wants to expel you from your land." They asked (others), " what is your opinion in the matter? 110 They said: "Keep him and his brother in suspense (for a while); and send to the cities men to collect- 111 to summon every skilful magician to your presence.' 112 And the wizards came to Pharaoh, saying: Surely there will be a reward for us if we are victors. 113 He answered: Yes, and surely ye shall be of those brought near (to me). 114 They said: O Musa! either thou cast down, or we shall be the ones to cast down. 115 "You cast it first," answered Moses. When they cast their spell, they bewitched the eyes of the people and petrified them by conjuring up a great charm. 116 And We inspired to Moses, "Throw your staff," and at once it devoured what they were falsifying. 117 ۞ Thus the truth was upheld, and the falsehood that they practised was exposed. 118 They were therefore defeated here and they turned back humiliated. 119 And the sorcerers prostrated themselves 120 They said, 'We believe in the Lord of all Being, 121 "The Lord of Moses and Aaron." 122 Said Pharaoh, 'You have believed in Him before I gave you leave. Surely this is a device you have devised in the city that you may expel its people from it. Now you shall know! 123 I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides; then I will surely crucify you all." 124 They said, “We shall return to our Lord.” 125 And what is it for which thou takest vengeance on us save that we have believed in the signs of our Lord when they came unto us? Our Lord! pour out upon us perseverance and cause us to die as Muslims. 126
