Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And shown him the two ways (good and evil)? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 Fire will be an awning over them. 20
God Almighty has spoken the truth.
