Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the clear Book, 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 an order from Us. We are ever sending. 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 So go forth with My servants by night; surely you will be pursued: 23 Cross the sea by cutting a path through it. Pharaoh's army will be drowned. 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29
