The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 (a chastisement meant) for the unbelievers, one which none can avert; 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 Though within sight of one another. The sinner would like to ransom himself from the torment of that Day by offering his sons, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 and guard their private parts 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 And those who are upright in their testimonies, 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 They will be honoured in the Gardens of Bliss. 35
