The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ When the great event comes to pass, 1 Which is bound to happen undoubtedly -- 2 (Many) will it bring low; (many) will it exalt; 3 When the earth is shaken up convulsively, 4 And the mountains shall be made to crumble with (an awful) crumbling, 5 so that they become as scattered dust 6 And you will become divided into three categories. 7 The People on the Right: and how fortunate will be the People on the Right! 8 Those on the Left -- how unlucky are those on the Left! 9 And the Outstrippers, the Outstrippers 10 Those! they shall be the brought nigh, 11 In gardens of tranquility; 12 a host of the ancients 13 but only a few from the later generations. 14 They (will be seated) on gold-encrusted couches, 15 Reclining on them, facing each other. 16 There will circulate among them young boys made eternal 17 With cups, and jugs, and a glass from the flowing wine, 18 a drink by which their minds will not be clouded nor will it cause drunkenness; 19 And fruits such as they choose, 20 And with flesh of fowls from that which they desire. 21 And companions with big beautiful eyes 22 as the likeness of hidden pearls, 23 A reward for what they used to do. 24 They shall not hear therein vain or sinful discourse, 25 Except the saying, “Peace, peace.” 26 The companions of the right - what are the companions of the right? 27 Midst lote-trees thornless. 28 Among Talh trees with flowers (or fruits) piled one above another,- 29 and amid the extended shade 30 And water poured out 31 And plenty of fruits. 32 unfailing and not forbidden. 33 And on couches or thrones, raised high. 34 We have formed them in a distinctive fashion, 35 And have made them virgins. 36 Loving companions matched in age, 37 for those on the Right, 38
