The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like unto dregs of oil. 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Save worshippers. 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 and guard their private parts 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
