In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who are wrapped up in your mantle, 1 worship (God) for a few hours at night. 2 Half of it - or subtract from it a little 3 Or add (a little) thereto - and chant the Qur'an in measure, 4 Surely We will make to light upon you a weighty Word. 5 Lo! the vigil of the night is (a time) when impression is more keen and speech more certain. 6 Surely you have in the day time a long occupation. 7 So remember the name of thy Lord and devote thyself with a complete devotion - 8 (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no god but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs. 9 and endure with patience whatever people may say [against thee,] and avoid them with a comely avoidance. 10 Leave Me to those who cry lies, those prosperous ones, and respite them a little, 11 We have heavy fetters and a blazing Fire in store for them; 12 And food which choketh (the partaker), and a painful doom 13 on the Day the earth and mountains shall shake and the mountains crumble into shifting sand dunes. 14 We have sent a messenger who is a witness over you, just as We sent a messenger to Pharoah before you. 15 But Pharaoh rebelled against the messenger, whereupon We seized him with no gentle grip. 16 Then how shall ye, if ye deny (Allah), guard yourselves against a Day that will make children hoary-headed?- 17 And the heaven shall be split therein. His promise indeed must be fulfilled. 18 Lo! This is a Reminder. Let him who will, then, choose a way unto his Lord. 19
