a large throng from the ancients, 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
