He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ (The Prophet (Peace be upon him)) frowned and turned away, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 And what could let you know? Perhaps he (comes to hear you) to be purified. 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 Whereas it is not on thee that he is not cleansed. 7 But as to him who came to you running. 8 And whereas he fears, 9 From him you are distracted. 10 By no means! Verily it is an admonition. 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 Exalted, pure. 14 (Set down) by scribes 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Cursed be man! how ungrateful is he! 17 [Does man ever consider] out of what substance [God] creates him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 then makes him to die, and buries him, 21 Then He will raise him up again when He please. 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Let the human being think about (how We produce) his food. 24 For that We pour forth water in abundance, 25 and then We cleave the earth [with new growth,] cleaving it asunder, 26 to yield therein corn, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 Olives and dates, 29 And thick gardens, 30 and fruits and fodder 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 That Day shall a man flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 On that day, each one has just one issue, which is enough for him. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 some faces on that day shall be dusty 40 Dust shall cover them 41 Those, they are the unbelievers, the immoral. 42
