Aaron had already told them, "O my people! You are only being tested by this. Your Lord is the All Merciful, so follow me and obey my command." 90 But they answered: "By no means shall we cease to worship it until Moses returns to us." 91 [And now that he had come back, Moses] said: "O Aaron! What has prevented thee, when thou didst see that they had gone astray, 92 That thou followedst me not? Hast thou then disobeyed my order? 93 'Son of my mother,' Aaron said, 'take me not by the beard, or the head! I was fearful that thou wouldst say, "Thou hast divided the Children of Israel, and thou hast not observed my word." 94 Moses said, "What was the matter with you, Samiri?" 95 (Samiri) said: "I saw what they saw not, so I took a handful (of dust) from the hoof print of the messenger [Jibrael's (Gabriel) horse] and threw it [into the fire in which were put the ornaments of the Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, or into the calf]. Thus my inner-self suggested to me." 96 'Begone! Your lot in this life is to cry: "untouchable!' said he (Moses). 'An appointment awaits you that you cannot fail to keep. Look at your god which you clung to indeed we will burn it and scatter its ashes upon the sea' 97 But the god of you all is the One Allah: there is no god but He: all things He comprehends in His knowledge. 98 And so We narrate to you the stories of the past, and We have given you a remembrance from Us. 99 Whoever turns away from it will bear a heavy burden on the Day of Judgement, 100 And will live for ever under it. How evil the burden they will carry on the Day of Doom! 101 the Day when the Trumpet shall be sounded and We shall muster the sinners, their eyes turned blue with terror. 102 They shall consult together secretly: You did tarry but ten (centuries). 103 We know best what they will say. The most perceptive of them will say, "You stayed only one day." 104
