He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? 4 For him who does not care, 5 To him you attend; 6 What does it matter to you if he will not become pure (from disbelief, you are only a Messenger, your duty is to convey the Message of Allah). 7 But as to him who came to you running. 8 And whereas he fears, 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 and whosoever wills, shall remember it. 12 On honoured leaves 13 Exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Virtuous. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 From what stuff hath He created him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 Then He causeth him to die, and putteth him in his grave; 21 then, He will raise him when He wills. 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 Let Man consider his nourishment. 24 We send down abundant water, 25 then We split the earth in fissures 26 and thereupon We cause grain to grow out of it, 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 and olives and palms, 29 And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 [As] enjoyment for you and your grazing livestock. 32 But when there comes the Deafening Blast 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 (Many) faces on that day shall be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news; 39 whereas some faces will be covered with dust 40 Blackness will cover them: 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
