a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This is their entertainment on the day of requital. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 That, “We have indeed been penalised!” 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
