Saad, by the Holy Reading (Koran) of the Remembrance. 1 But the Unbelievers (are steeped) in self-glory and Separatism. 2 How many generations before them did We destroy? In the end they cried (for mercy)- when there was no longer time for being saved! 3 And they marvel that a warner from among themselves hath come unto them, and the disbelievers say: This is a wizard, a charlatan. 4 What, has he made the gods One God? This is indeed a marvellous thing.' 5 The chiefs among them departed saying: go, and persevere in your gods; verily this is a thing designed. 6 We have not heard of this in later religion. This is naught but an invention. 7 What! Upon him alone from among all of us should a [divine] reminder have been bestowed from on high?" Nay, but it is My Own reminder that they distrust! Nay, they have not yet tasted the suffering which I do impose! 8 Do they have the stores of the mercy of your Lord, the mighty and munificent? 9 Or is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them theirs? Then let them ascend by ropes! 10 This is only a small army out of the several armies that will suffer defeat here. 11 Before them (were many who) belied Messengers, the people of Nuh (Noah); and 'Ad; and Fir'aun (Pharaoh) the man of stakes (with which he used to punish the people), 12 And Samood and the people of Lut and the dwellers of the thicket; these were the parties. 13 None of them was such that it did not deny the Noble Messengers, therefore My punishment became inevitable. 14
