He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or be admonished, so that the admonition might have profited him? 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 To him you attend; 6 Whereas it is not on thee that he is not cleansed. 7 But he who comes to you running, 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 you pay no heed to him. 10 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment, 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 upon highly honored pages, 13 Exalted (in dignity), kept pure and holy, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Noble and dutiful. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 From what did He create him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 He makes his path easy for him. 20 Then He caused him to die and made him to be buried. 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 Then let mankind look at his food - 24 We send down abundant water, 25 Thereafter We cleave the earth in clefts, 26 And We made corn grow, 27 And grapes and herbage, 28 and olives and palms, 29 And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 So when the deafening Shout arrives, 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 Each man will have enough cares that day. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 whereas some faces will be covered with dust 40 Blackness will cover them: 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
