The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 So the torment overtook them. Verily, in this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
