Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha Mim 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, 18 And that do not exalt yourselves against Allah, surely I will bring to you a clear authority: 19 "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people. 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
