The Romans (Al-Room)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ A. L. M. 1 The Romans have been defeated 2 In the nearer land, and they, after their defeat will be victorious 3 Within three to nine years. The decision of the matter, before and after (these events) is only with Allah, (before the defeat of Romans by the Persians, and after, i.e. the defeat of the Persians by the Romans). And on that Day, the believers (i.e. Muslims) will rejoice (at the victory given by Allah to the Romans against the Persians), 4 With the help of Allah, He helps whom He wills, and He is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 5 It is a promise of God; and God does not go back on His promise. Yet most men do not understand: 6 they know but the outer surface of this world's life, whereas of the ultimate things they are utterly unaware. 7 Ponder they not in their minds: Allah hath not created the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is in-between the twain save with a purpose and for a term appointed? And verily many men in the meeting of their Lord are unbelievers. 8 Have they not travelled on the earth and seen how the others before them had met their end? They were far more powerful than them, furrowed the earth and colonised it far more than they; and their apostles came to them with visible signs. It was surely not for God to wrong them, they wronged themselves. 9 Then the fate of those who committed evil to the extreme was that they denied the signs of Allah and used to mock at them. 10
