The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 in which you are now living 2 or by the great father and his wonderful son (Abraham and Ishmael) 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Thinketh he that none hath power over him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? -- 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
