A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day well-known. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!" 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 "We are ruined, 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
