We sent Moses with Our signs to the Pharaoh and his nobles. He said: "I have been sent by the Lord of all the worlds." 46 But as soon as he came before them with Our [miraculous] signs, lo! they derided them, 47 And We did not show them a sign but it was greater than its like, and We overtook them with chastisement that they may turn. 48 (Whenever they faced an affliction) they would say: “O magician, pray for us to your Lord according to your station with Him. We shall certainly be guided to the Right Way.” 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 And Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made among his people saying: O my people! Is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing under me? Can ye not then discern? 51 Am I better or this contemptible man who is scarcely able to express himself? 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 So he made his people unsteady, and they obeyed him; surely they were an ungodly people. 54 So when they made Us wrathful, We took revenge from them We therefore drowned all of them. 55 We made them become of the people of the past and an example for the coming generations. 56
