The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
