The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read in the name of your Lord Who created. 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Recite! Your Lord is the most Honorable One, 3 who, by the pen, taught the human being: 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 Yes indeed, man is surely rebellious. 6 because he thinks that he is independent. 7 Indeed towards your Lord only is the return. 8 What thinkest thou? He who forbids 9 a servant (of Allah) when he prays? 10 Have you thought, if he had been on guidance 11 Or enjoined guarding (against evil)? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Knoweth he not that Allah beholdeth? 14 No indeed; surely, if he gives not over, We shall seize him by the forelock, 15 by the lying forelock steeped in sin. 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 We shall call on the guards of Hell. 18 Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). ۩ 19
