The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By oath of the night when it covers 1 And the day resplendent 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 As for him who gave out his wealth (for Allah's sake) and abstained (from disobeying Him), 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing; 7 And as for him who is niggardly and considers himself free from need (of Allah), 8 and calls the ultimate good a lie 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And verify Ours is both the Hereafter and the life present. 13 I have warned you about the fierce blazing fire 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 And away from it shall be kept the one who guards most (against evil), 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 And none hath with him any favour for reward, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
