He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ (The Prophet (Peace be upon him)) frowned and turned away, 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 How could you know? Perhaps he would cleanse himself, 3 or yet remember, and the Reminder profit him. 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 you eagerly attended to him -- 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 But as to him who came to you running. 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 Him thou neglectest! 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 most exalted and purified, 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Perish Man! How unthankful he is! 17 From what did He create him? 18 From a drop of liquid; He created him and then set several measures for him. 19 Then the way He made easy. 20 Then He causes him to die, and puts him in his grave; 21 Then when He wills, He will resurrect him. 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 Let the human being think about (how We produce) his food. 24 We poured water, pouring it in great abundance, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 together with grapes and vegetables, 28 And olive and palm trees 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 (These are made so as to be) means of enjoyment for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 That Day shall a man flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 Everyone on that Day will have affairs to keep him occupied. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 And many a face will be covered with dust on that day. 40 Veiled in darkness, 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
