The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Does man think that no one will ever have power over him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 the giving of food upon the day of hunger 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
