And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds." 46 But when he brought them Our signs, lo, they laughed at them. 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 And they said, 'Sorcerer, pray to thy Lord for us by the covenant He has made with thee, and surely we shall be right-guided.' 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Does not the dominion of Egypt belong to me, (witness) these streams flowing underneath my (palace)? What! see ye not then? 51 Am I better or this contemptible man who is scarcely able to express himself? 52 Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?" 53 Thus he made light (of the matter) to his people, and they obeyed him. They were certainly wicked. 54 So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one. 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
