Indeed We sent Moses with Our Signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He told them: “I am a Messenger of the Lord of the Universe.” 46 But when he brought to them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 And they said: O magician! call on your Lord for our sake, as He has made the covenant with you; we shall surely be the followers of the right way. 49 Yet no sooner did We take away the affliction from them than they broke their pledge. 50 Pharaoh called to his people, "My people, is the Kingdom of Egypt not mine? And these rivers that flow at my feet, are they not mine? Do you not see? 51 Am I (not) better than him who is contemptible, and cannot even express himself clearly? 52 Why have no armlets of gold been given him, or angels sent down successively with him' 53 Thus he incited his people to levity, and they obeyed him: for, behold, they were people depraved! 54 So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one. 55 And We made them a precedent (as a lesson for those coming after them), and an example to later generations. 56
