The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 but, We see it as near! 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 no loyal friend shall question loyal friend, 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all those that are in the earth, (wishing) then (that) this might deliver him. 14 Nay, verily it is a furnace 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 calling him who drew back and turned away, 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 Save worshippers. 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
