He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him? 4 For him who does not care, 5 you attend to him, 6 Though it is not your concern if he should not grow (in fulness). 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 and in awe of God 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 By no means! Verily it is an admonition. 11 and whosoever wills, shall remember it. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 most exalted and purified, 14 (Set down) by scribes 15 Noble and dutiful. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 From what did He create him? 18 He created him from a living germ. He determined his fate 19 and made the path of guidance easy for him to follow. 20 Then He caused him to die and be buried 21 Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 [how it is] that We pour down water, pouring it down abundantly; 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 to yield therein corn, 27 And grapes and herbage, 28 And olive-trees and palm-trees 29 And gardens, dense with many trees, 30 and fruits and pastures – 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 on that Day some faces will be beaming, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 but others will be gloomy 40 Darkness shall cover them. 41 Those are the disbelievers, the wicked. 42
