a large throng from the ancients, 39 and many from the later generations. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten - 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 That, "We have indeed been penalised!" 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
