The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the sun and its heat and brightness, 1 by the moon, which follows it, 2 By the day when it glorifieth it. 3 and the night as it veils it darkly! 4 And the heaven and Him Who built it, 5 By the earth and Him Who spread it forth, 6 and by the soul and by Him Who perfectly proportioned it, 7 And inspired in it the knowledge of its sins and its piety. 8 Surely blissful is he who hath cleansed it, 9 And he who confines it will surely come to grief. 10 The Thamud denied (the truth) in their perverseness 11 What time the greatest wretch of them rose up. 12 So the Noble Messenger of Allah said to them, “Stay away from the she camel of Allah, and from its turn to drink.” 13 Then they belied him and they hamstrung her; wherefore their Lord overwhelmed them for their crime, and made it equal. 14 And He feared not the consequence thereof 15
