The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 and by the day when it unveils. 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 Then as for him who giveths and feareth Him. 5 And testifieth to the Good, 6 We shall ease the way of fortune for him. 7 As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah), 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes. 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 I have warned you about the fierce blazing fire 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it. 16 But the righteous one will avoid it - 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 surely, he shall be satisfied. 21
