۞ AND PROPOUND unto them the parable of two men, upon one of whom We had bestowed two vinyards, and surrounded them with date-palms, and placed a field of grain in-between. 32 Each of the gardens yielded its fruit and did not withhold the least; and We made a stream flow in between them. 33 And he had fruit, so he said to his companion while he was conversing with him, "I am greater than you in wealth and mightier in [numbers of] men." 34 He went into his garden in a state (of mind) unjust to his soul: He said, "I deem not that this will ever perish, 35 Nor do I believe that the Hour of Resurrection will ever come to pass. And even if I am returned to my Lord, I shall find a better place than this." 36 His friend said to him, "How can you disbelieve in the One who turned clay into sperm out of which He created you? 37 "But as for my part (I believe) that He is Allah, my Lord and none shall I associate as partner with my Lord. 38 When entering your garden, you should have said, "This is what God willed; All Power belongs to Him. Even if you consider me inferior to yourself in wealth and offspring, 39 “So it is likely that my Lord will give me a garden better than yours, and send bolts of lightning from the skies on your garden – it therefore turns into a barren plain.” 40 Or the water thereof become deep sunken so that therefor thou canst not make a search. 41 So his fruits were encircled (with ruin). And he remained clapping his hands with sorrow over what he had spent upon it, while it was all destroyed on its trellises, he could only say: "Would I had ascribed no partners to my Lord!" [Tafsir Ibn Kathir] 42 And there was no host, beside Allah, to help him, nor could he be of any help to himself. 43 Here is protection only Allah's, the True One; He is best in (the giving of) reward and best in requiting. 44
