The tribe of Ad rejected the Messengers. 123 Recall, when their brother Hud said to them: "Have you no fear? 124 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 125 "So fear Allah and obey me. 126 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 127 "Will you, in your wanton folly, build [idolatrous] altars on every height, 128 "And do ye get for yourselves fine buildings in the hope of living therein (for ever)? 129 "And when you seize, seize you as tyrants? 130 So fear Allah and obey me. 131 fear Him who has aided you with all that you know -- 132 He has given you flocks and sons, 133 “And with gardens and water-springs.” 134 indeed, I fear for you the torment of an awful day." 135 [But] they answered. "It is all one to us whether thou preachest [something new] or art not of those who [like to] preach. 136 “This is nothing but the tradition of former people.” 137 and we are not going to be chastised [for adhering to it]!" 138 So they rejected him, and We destroyed them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 139 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 140
