Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the Dawn 1 and the ten nights! 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 is there not in this strong evidence for a man of sense? 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 (The people of) Aram, possessors of lofty buildings, 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 And (with) Samood, who hewed out the rocks in the valley, 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 And multiplied iniquity therein? 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me." 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life." 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 And no one binds like He does! 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you! 28 "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! 29 enter My Paradise! 30
