[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 In gardens and springs. 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 and the punishment seized them. Surely, in that there is a sign. Yet most of them do not believe. 158 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 159
