a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
