Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 Or the giving of food in a day of hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 Such are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 and [as for] those who are bent on denying the truth of Our revelations, they are the people of the left hand, 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
True are the words of God the Almighty.
