The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Therefore, [O believer,] endure all adversity with goodly patience: 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 It snatches away by the scalps, 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 who are afraid of the torment of their Lord, 27 Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from. 28 and guard their private parts 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
