The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 arise and give warning! 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 and purify your robes, 4 and flee from the statues! 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 that shall be a Harsh Day 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 May he be condemned! 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then he thought; 21 Then he frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
